Goddess Parvati created a young boy out of sandalwood paste to guard her door while she bathed. When Lord Shiva returned, the boy blocked his path. In a fit of rage, Shiva beheaded the boy. Seeing Parvati’s immense grief, Shiva promised to bring him back to life.
