Eyes Wide Shut premiered after Kubrick’s sudden death in March 1999. Warner Bros. infamously digitally altered certain scenes to obscure nudity, effectively performing a real-world phim on the director’s vision. But Kubrick, anticipating this, had built the muzzle into the film’s very form: the lingering shots of faces in silent contemplation, the whispered threats, the slow zooms into darkness.
