The series juxtaposes brutal, sudden violence with quiet scenes of domesticity—tucking in his daughter, visiting his brother in a care facility, or having awkward dates.

The transition was seamless—from doting father to "The Magician," the man who makes people disappear. He met a man named Caleb behind a rusted warehouse. Caleb owed Freddy money and had been "rude" about the interest rates. "I don't have it, Ray! Give me another week," Caleb stammered, backing into a stack of shipping pallets. Ray didn't yell. He didn't even look angry. He just sighed, the sound of a man tired of hearing the same excuses. "It’s not my job to collect money, Caleb," Ray said, stepping into the man's personal space. "It’s my job to make you sorry you didn't pay when you had the chance". He delivered a swift, clinical blow to Caleb's solar plexus, followed by a knee to the ribs. As Caleb crumpled, Ray checked his watch. He had twenty minutes to pick up a specialized cake for his brother Bruce’s birthday. An hour later, Ray was in Bruce’s living room, gently helping his brother—who was struggling with the advanced stages of motor neuron disease—take a bite of the cake. Ray Shoesmith (Scott Ryan) is a divorced father who shares custody of his young daughter, Brittany (Chika Yasumura). He cares for his older brother, Bruce (Nicholas Cassim), who has motor neurone disease. He has a close friendship with his "fixer"/agent, Gary (Justin Rosniak), and later a girlfriend, Ally (Damon Herriman — note: the role of Ally is played by actress Brooke Satchwell; Damon Herriman plays Ray's friend and associate, Dave).
