– Deploy a ninja to "Search" for hidden commanders in territories. This is the only way to recruit several unique units (e.g., Mouri, Uesugi, certain female commanders).

You must manage "National Power," which limits the total troop cost and number of commanders you can employ. Conquering new provinces increases this limit, allowing for a larger, more powerful army.

What makes the combat engaging is the asymmetry. Unlike games where the player and AI play by the same rules, Sengoku Rance creates challenge through differentiation. The AI controls massive armies with territory advantages, while the player controls a smaller, elite force of "Named Characters." These characters have unique skills, passive abilities, and "Love" mechanics that unlock as the player invests time in them. The joy of the gameplay loop is discovering a character's hidden potential—a generic-looking foot soldier might reveal a devastating counter-attack skill if properly invested in. This encourages experimentation and creates emotional attachment to the troops.
