In the script, I focused heavily on textures. Instead of describing a sunset over a plantation, I described the chapped hands of a field medic, the smell of wet wool, the sound of a wet canvas tent flapping in a Virginia rainstorm. I wanted the reader to feel the cold. The Civil War was fought in mud and heat and snow. The screenplay needed to reflect the physical misery of the conflict.
