Remarkably, Episode 1 contains only 47 lines of dialogue in its 24-minute runtime. The narrative is carried instead by what film scholar Michel Chion calls “acousmatic sound”—sounds whose source is unseen. The story kicks off during a school field trip to Kyoto. Natsuki is trying to keep the class in order, while Hoshino skips the guided tour to wander off on his own. Worried for his safety, Natsuki chases after him.
