Cody's journey begins when he meets Big Z (voiced by Jeff Bridges), a legendary surfer who becomes his idol and mentor. Big Z is a four-time Surf's Up champion who has retired from competitive surfing and now runs a surf shop on the island. Cody convinces Big Z to let him compete in the upcoming Surf's Up competition, and with the help of his new friend, he begins to prepare for the big event.
