The i-Monitor IIUM project demonstrates that a low-cost, in-house developed IoT monitoring system can significantly enhance safety, energy efficiency, and occupant comfort on a large university campus. While challenges such as sensor drift and WiFi authentication required pragmatic solutions, the pilot proved its value through faster emergency response, measurable energy savings, and positive user acceptance. By aligning with Islamic ethical principles (trust, no harm, stewardship of resources), i-Monitor serves as a replicable model for other smart campuses, particularly in developing nations. Future work will focus on AI-driven automation and seamless mobile integration, moving IIUM closer to its vision of a truly “smart and sustainable Islamic university.”
