It bridged the gap between the technical, sterile world of early digital editing and the user-friendly, guided editing suites we see today (like Photoshop Elements or Affinity Photo).

This was the standout feature. XI introduced a "Thinify" tool (a precursor to modern body-altering AI) and an enhanced "Blemish Fixer." While today we have Adobe's Generative Fill or Facetune, back then, having a dedicated "Teeth Whitening" and "Sunburn Reduction" brush in a $99 software package was magic for the average user.
The primary selling point of Photo XI was, and remains, its value proposition. At roughly $99 (with frequent rebates bringing it down to $59), it offered about 80% of Photoshop's functionality for 20% of the price.
