Watermarks are widely used in PDF documents to assert ownership, discourage unauthorized distribution, or indicate document status (e.g., “Confidential” or “Draft”). However, numerous open-source tools claiming to remove or obscure watermarks have emerged on GitHub. This paper provides a systematic review of the most popular PDF watermark remover repositories, categorizing them by technique (e.g., image-layer removal, text-layer editing, redaction, or overlay injection). We analyze their technical implementations, effectiveness against different watermark types (visible text, semi-transparent images, vector stamps, and metadata-only marks), and the ethical and legal concerns surrounding their use. Finally, we discuss defensive countermeasures for PDF authors.
