By the summer of 1970, the cracks began to show. Anthony Phillips, suffering from stage fright and creative burnout, left the band after the Trespass recording sessions. The remaining members decided to continue, but a new tension emerged. Tony Banks and Peter Gabriel felt the band needed a more dynamic, inventive drummer—someone who could handle sudden time-signature changes, delicate pastoral passages, and explosive crescendos. john mayhew genesis

During his time with Genesis, Mayhew played on two albums: "Nursery Cryme" (1971) and "A Trick of the Tail" was actually recorded before "Selling England by the Pound" but released after, and "Selling England by the Pound" (1973) but not on, as he left before it was finished.
