Openvpn Tap Driver Repack • Ultra HD

This guide covers the installation, troubleshooting, and manual configuration of the OpenVPN TAP Driver on Windows. This is one of the most common stumbling blocks for setting up VPN bridges or getting certain VPN configurations to work.

What is the TAP Driver? OpenVPN requires a virtual network adapter to function.

TAP: Works at Layer 2 (Ethernet). It behaves like a virtual network switch. Use this if you need Bridging (making the VPN client appear on the same LAN subnet as the server) or if the server config specifies dev tap . TUN: Works at Layer 3 (IP Routing). This is the standard for most "road warrior" setups where you just want to access the internet or a remote network securely.

If your OpenVPN log says:

All TAP-Windows adapters on this system are currently in use. OR There are no TAP-Windows adapters installed. ...then this guide is for you.

Method 1: The "Easy" Way (Re-install) The easiest way to fix driver issues is to let the OpenVPN installer handle it.

Download the latest OpenVPN installer (usually "OpenVPN Connect" or the older "OpenVPN Community" version). Run the installer. If you already have it installed, select "Repair" or "Reinstall" . During the installation steps, look for a component list. Ensure "OpenVPN TAP Driver" or "TAP Adapter" is checked. Proceed with the installation. It will automatically create a network adapter usually named Ethernet 2 or TAP-Windows Adapter V9 . openvpn tap driver

Method 2: Manual Install via Device Manager If the installer fails, you can force the driver installation manually.

Open Device Manager:

Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager . OpenVPN requires a virtual network adapter to function

Add Legacy Hardware:

Click on your computer name at the top of the list. Go to the Action menu in the top bar. Select Add legacy hardware .
