The film tells the story of Ip Man (Donnie Yen), a Wing Chun master who lives in Foshan, China during the Sino-Japanese War. Ip Man is a family man with a wife, Cheung Wing-yan (Sammo Hung's wife, Joyce Godenzi, in a brief appearance), and two sons. He is also a skilled martial artist and runs a martial arts school.
