The Remington Gail layout was the answer to this collision. It mapped the phonetic richness of Hindi onto the rigid grid of the Western machine. The result was a layout that, unlike the intuitive phonetic transliteration (typing "k" for "k" on a QWERTY keyboard), required the memorization of specific positions.
