West Bengal: Gay Group

Originally called the "Friendship Walk," this event in Kolkata was the first of its kind in South Asia, with only 15 participants wearing yellow t-shirts with pink triangles.

West Bengal’s LGBTQ+ community is the most organized and historically significant in India. Groups like Sappho for Equality and the various university collectives have created a robust support network. However, the transition from "visibility" to "total social acceptance" is ongoing. The movement is currently shifting from organizing Pride walks to demanding civil rights—property inheritance, marriage equality, and protection from workplace discrimination. west bengal gay group
