Mame Roms Chd [new]

For newer games (mid-1990s and later), :

A common misconception is that CHD files replace ZIP files. In most cases, they do not. They work in tandem.

A CHD file is a losslessly compressed image of an arcade machine's mass storage media. It serves a distinct purpose from standard ROM chips:

| Myth | Reality | |------|---------| | "CHDs are just renamed ISO files." | No, CHD is a custom compression format with error-correction metadata. | | "You can run a CHD without the ROM zip." | Incorrect. The ROM contains the bootloader and main CPU code. The CHD is just data storage. | | "All MAME games need CHDs." | False. The vast majority of arcade games (thousands) are ROM-only. Only later, storage-heavy games require CHDs. |
