Once prepared, the individual should lie on their side with the affected ear facing upward. Using a dropper or a teaspoon, three to four drops of olive oil are administered into the ear canal. To ensure the oil travels down the canal effectively, the pinna (the outer part of the ear) should be gently pulled upward and backward for adults, or downward and backward for children. Following the application, the individual should remain in the lying position for five to ten minutes, allowing gravity to aid the oil in penetrating the wax plug. Upon sitting up, the excess oil will naturally drain out, and the outer ear can be wiped with a tissue or cotton wool. It is important to note that this is not a one-time fix; consistency is key. This routine should typically be repeated twice daily for three to five days to fully soften the wax.
