This paper explores the nuances, challenges, and strategies involved in translating Odia literature into English. Despite Odia being a classical language of India (granted status in 2014), its literary output remains underrepresented in global English readership. Focusing on book translation—specifically prose (novels, short stories) and poetry—this study analyzes common obstacles, including lexical gaps, cultural untranslatability, syntactic divergence, and the loss of rhythmic and emotive qualities. Using case studies from translated works such as Fakir Mohan Senapati’s Chha Mana Atha Guntha (translated as Six Acres and a Third ) and Pratibha Ray’s Yajnaseni , the paper proposes a balanced approach between domestication and foreignization. Findings suggest that successful Odia-to-English translation requires not only bilingual competence but also deep ethnographic and literary sensitivity.
