Om Prakash Makhija (Shah Rukh Khan) is a "junior artist" or extra who dreams of becoming a superstar and is hopelessly in love with the leading actress, Shanti Priya (Deepika Padukone). He discovers that Shanti is secretly married to the ruthless producer Mukesh Mehra (Arjun Rampal) and is pregnant. To protect his career, Mukesh traps Shanti in a burning film set.
