By releasing the film via torrent, the Zeitgeist producers shifted the bandwidth burden to the audience itself.

The film rose to prominence through indexing sites like The Pirate Bay, Mininova, and isoHunt. Because the content was free and encouraged to be shared, it quickly rose to the top of "most downloaded" charts.
