Perhaps the most critical technical advancement in Reader XI was the introduction of "Protected Mode." In an era where PDFs were becoming a primary vector for malware and virus transmission, Adobe introduced a sandbox architecture. This isolated the PDF process from the rest of the operating system. If a user opened a malicious PDF file, the potential damage to the computer was significantly limited.
