The set design directly shapes character action.

Production designer Norman Reynolds and set decorator Michael Ford drew inspiration from both authentic and cinematic sources.

The design of the temple scene was led by Lawrence Kasdan, the film's screenwriter, and production designer, Dean Cundey. They drew inspiration from the ancient Inca city of Machu Picchu in Peru, as well as other temples in South America, such as the Temple of the Sun in Cusco, Peru.

The temple scene was groundbreaking in terms of special effects. The production team used a combination of practical effects, such as pyrotechnics and stunts, and innovative uses of miniature models and matte paintings.
