His nickname——comes from his grisly fate following that mutiny. When the crew stole the cursed Aztec gold, Bill felt they deserved to remain cursed for betraying Jack. To ensure they could never lift the curse, he sent one of the 882 gold medallions to his son in England. In retaliation, Barbossa had Bill's feet strapped to a cannon by his bootstraps and threw him overboard.
