Free — Raniganj Mine Accident

The Raniganj coalfield, recognized as the birthplace of Indian coal mining, has long been a theater of industrial ambition and operational hazard. This paper examines the 2010 coal mine accident at the New Kenda colliery in the Raniganj belt, one of the deadliest mining disasters in recent West Bengal history. By analyzing the geological, technical, and administrative factors leading to the tragedy, this study highlights the systemic failures in safety protocols within the Indian mining sector. Furthermore, the paper evaluates the subsequent rescue operations and critiques the efficacy of post-accident policy reforms, arguing that technological stagnation and regulatory laxity remain primary threats to miner safety in the region.
