It wasn’t a real thing. Not in the physical sense. You couldn’t buy it at a hardware store or tie it to a cleat. But we all grew up dragging it behind us. A thick, invisible cord of inherited tension, secondhand anxiety, and the sharp, whispered warnings of those who came before us.

He burst through the door and took the stairs three at a time, descending into the heart of the building. He exited through a side door into a different alley, blending instantly into the crowd of late-night commuters and dog walkers on the main street.
