In the present timeline, Kurumi is haunted by hallucinations of her dead sister. These hallucinations act as a psychological antagonist, constantly berating Kurumi and telling her she is worthless and should die. This creates a suspenseful atmosphere where the player (or viewer) is never quite sure if the ghost is a supernatural occurrence or a manifestation of Kurumi's psychosis.
Kurumi attends (a different school from Sakuragaoka). After seeing a recording of the original K-On! band (HTT) playing at the school festival, she is overwhelmed by the energy of the drummer, Ritsu Tainaka. Inspired, she decides to form her own light music club and band, even though she has no musical experience. Years prior to the events of the story, Kurumi was involved in a devastating accident where a bus carrying her school's basketball team plunged off a cliff. The survivors were trapped in the wreckage for days with limited food and water.
