If the automatic method produces a video that is too dark, too bright, or lacks contrast, you can take manual control. This method uses the tab to force the conversion.

To evaluate the effectiveness of HandBrake's HDR to SDR conversion, we compared the output of several HDR10 and HLG sources converted to SDR using HandBrake. Our tests revealed that:

| Problem | Likely Cause | Solution | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | | Color Space not set to BT.709 | Double-check the Video tab. Also ensure your output container is MP4 or MKV. | | Image is way too dark | Tone mapping peak luminance too low | Increase the tone mapping param to 2000 or higher. Or switch to Hable algorithm. | | Colors look unnatural / oversaturated | You converted from Dolby Vision without an HDR10 fallback | HandBrake cannot properly convert Profile 5 Dolby Vision. Find an HDR10 version of the file. | | Encode is very slow | HDR conversion is computationally heavy | Use hardware encoding (if available) via Video Encoder: H.264 (Intel QSV) or H.265 (NVIDIA NVEnc) , but quality may be slightly lower. |
