In the 29th century, Earth is a desolate wasteland covered in trash, abandoned by humans who now live on a giant luxury starliner. The last working trash compactor robot, WALL-E (Waste Allocation Load Lifter: Earth-Class), spends his days compacting garbage and collecting curious human artifacts. His lonely routine changes when a sleek, egg-shaped probe robot named EVE (Extraterrestrial Vegetation Evaluator) arrives to scan for signs of plant life. When WALL-E shows her a living seedling he found, EVE goes into standby mode to signal the mothership, and a lovesick WALL-E follows her into space, where the fate of humanity hangs on a simple act of devotion.
