In the Low Countries (Netherlands and Belgium), "capaciteitentesten" are ubiquitous in recruitment processes (e.g., by Brunel, Randstad, or the government). These tests measure general mental ability (GCA) through three core domains: capaciteitentesten oefenen
Institute for Assessment & Selection Research Date: April
A persistent debate exists: Can one genuinely improve their capacity, or only their test-taking skill? This paper explores the phenomenon of "oefenen" (practicing) from a dual perspective: cognitive psychology and psychometrics. A persistent debate exists: Can one genuinely improve
Capacity tests (capaciteitentesten) are a cornerstone of modern employee selection and educational admission processes. This paper examines the practice effect associated with these tests—specifically verbal, numerical, and abstract reasoning. While traditional psychometric theory posits that aptitude measures innate ability, contemporary meta-analyses reveal that targeted practice (oefenen) can significantly elevate scores, sometimes by up to 0.5 standard deviations. This paper argues that practicing capacity tests does not merely "inflate" scores but enhances test-taking fluency, reduces cognitive load, and familiarizes the candidate with item formats. We provide evidence-based strategies for effective practice and discuss the ethical implications for employers and candidates.
Begin zonder tijdslimiet om de techniek te snappen. Ga daarna strikt oefenen met een klokje. Je moet leren om "los te laten" als je een vraag te lang duurt.
