Modern militaries have intra-squad radios, GPS, and silent vibration alerts. Yet the Manual remains central to basic training and ceremonial drill. We identify four non-tactical functions:

Contrary to expectations, the Manual has seen a tactical resurgence in 21st-century counterinsurgency. Special operations forces report using (modified hand signals derived from the Manual’s syntax) for night raids where voice or radio compromises position. Similarly, certain toques are repurposed as non-verbal IED (improvised explosive device) avoidance signals—for example, a specific drum rhythm to indicate "clear" vs. "danger."
